ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

The program of English Language Teaching has been sustaining educational services since the establishment of the university in 2011. The program offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The aim of the English Language Teaching Undergraduate Program, with 240 ECTS credits and 8 semesters, is to train teachers who are to work at primary, secondary and higher education in public and private sectors, are equipped with basic knowledge, skills and attitudes, internalize a progressive view of the world and ethical values, and are open to the innovations and developments of teaching English.

The medium of instruction in the undergraduate program is English, and the program covers the fields of language, linguistics, culture, literature and mostly language teaching. It aims to develop knowledge and skills in language skills, material development and adaptation for different age groups of various language skills, exam preparation and evaluation; designing lesson plans considering students' needs and expectations and especially training English teachers. Students attend practise classes and do a practicum at schools to transfer theoretical knowledge on teaching profession into skills and develop their knowledge and skills by practising.

Our graduates are qualified enough to be highly distinguished professionals in their speciality areas. To this end, the program is designed to train students with sufficient skills and competencies to be qualified as teachers of English as a foreign language at schools authorized by the Ministry of Education and at private institutions.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING is a Bachelor's Degree Programme with 240 ECTS Credits meets the minimum level (cycle) requirements, in terms of ECTS Credits and level descriptors, of the first cycle degree qualifications of the Overarching Framework of European Qualifications Framework of HE(QF-EHEA) as well as the 6th levels of qualifications of both the Turkish Qualifications Framework for HE (TYYÇ, NQF-HETR) and the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL) in terms of the later.

Upon the successful completion of this study programme, the students are awarded the qualification of BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING.

Admission of Turkish Students for Undergraduate Program

Entering the first cycle degree programs in Turkish higher education institutions is through central placement and aptitude test. Central placement examination is held by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). The exam (placement) consists of two stages. The first stage is the basic competence examination, and the second one is the field competence examination. Those students who get satisfactory points for these two examinations can make their choices of first cycle programs based on their type of test score. The placement into the first cycle degree programs is based on the scores students obtain from Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) and their grade point average of secondary education (high school in Turkish Education System), which is made centrally by ÖSYM using a computerized process.

Admission of International Students for Undergraduate Program

Each Turkish University sets its own admission criteria and decides which applicants meet those criteria. Therefore, applications by degree-seeking international students to an undergraduate program must be made directly to the Student Affairs Office or international Office of the respective university.

Upon receiving the necessary documents from the applicant, the faculty boards evaluate the application status of each applicant. Interviews may be arranged with the candidate via e-mail or telephone or skype if necessary. Upon acceptance of the application, the applicant obtains the right to study at the university and to register for the upcoming semester.

In order to graduate from the program, students are required to take undergraduate courses in return for 240 ECTS credits and succeed in them; and also have a general academic average of 2.00 out of 4.00.

Procedures to recognise prior learning (RPL), including non-formal and informal learning, is in an early stage of development in Turkey and there is not a comprehensive and enabling framework at the national level to enable this process to be fully applied. However, within the institutional autonomy there are some implementations at the institutional level for allocating credits for the exemption of some programme requirements. Students who have a certain level of knowledge, skills and competencies in foreign languages and computer are exempted from the relevant course units of the course programme.. RPL is also practiced for students who wish to transfer their studies other higher education institutions including national and international institutions. In such cases students are accepted to the degree programs who had studied previously and were successful , may be exempt from some of the course units upon the approval of the adaptation committee.
 
Such procedures of recognition are also used comprehensively in practice at our university when deemed necessary. Arrangements for the recognition of Recognition of Previous Learning procedures are outlined in the relevant section of our Education and Examination Regulations, Rules & regulations for Postgraduate Programmes and that of Regulations for Lateral Transfer of Students.

Graduates of this program can further their careers and teach at public and private schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. Successful graduates can also apply to master´s and doctoral programs in the field of ELT or other programs accepting students from this field.
