Course Objective

In order to develop communication skills, priority is given to a communicative and intercultural approach:

Consolidating grammar and lexical use

Increasing knowledge on oral and written structures in English applied to academic speaking and writing

Writing tutorials and practicing Grammar

Speaking within and before a group

Comprehend longer talks in English better.

Understand the main idea of a complex text in English better.

Present or share ideas in oral English more fluently.

Produce clear, detailed essays on a wide range of subjects in English.

Explaining a viewpoint on a topical issue in English clearly

Course Content

This course is a basic introduction to the grammatical description and sentence analysis of English. Some topics to be covered include (i) the nature of language and linguistics, (ii) grammatical categories, (iii) identifying parts of speech, (iv) phrase structure, (v) clause types and (vi) basic sentence patterns. The skills gained will be helpful in sentence analysis and also in the description of errors made by EFL students. It also equips you with a deeper understanding of how English sentence structure works, which is very useful in academic and professional writing. The course is not intended to improve students’ general English skills, written or spoken.
