Principles for Transfer Between Thesis and
Non-Thesis Master's Programs
1. A student wishing to transfer to a thesis master's program must have studied for at least one semester in the non-thesis master's program in which they are enrolled and must have taken and passed all the courses of that semester.
2. The student's weighted grade point average for the courses taken in the non-thesis master's program in which they are enrolled must be at least 2.50 out of 4.00. The required weighted grade point average may be raised upon the proposal of the relevant Department and the approval of the Institute Board.
3. A student wishing to transfer to a thesis master's program must score at least 55 in the ALES score type specified by the program applied for and must document this. ALES scores are valid for 5 years. The required ALES score may be raised upon the proposal of the relevant Department and the approval of the Institute Board.
4. For transfer to thesis master's programs taught in a foreign language, the applicant must obtain the relevant score specified by the program from the YDS or YÖKDİL examinations, or an equivalent score from a foreign language examination recognized as equivalent by ÖSYM, or the score required in the Foreign Language Proficiency Examination held by IZU, which is accepted by some programs. The foreign language examination held by IZU is valid for two years.
5. For a student transferring from a non-thesis master's program to a thesis master's program, the time spent in the previous program is included in the calculation of the period of study. For a student transferring from a thesis master's program to a non-thesis master's program, the time spent in the previous program is likewise included in the calculation of the period of study; however, a student whose period of study has expired is granted one additional semester to complete their courses and master's project.
6. A student who transfers from a thesis master's program to a non-thesis master's program may not transfer back to a thesis master's program.
7. A student who transfers from a non-thesis master's program to a thesis master's program must fulfill the publication requirement in order to graduate. Provided that it relates to the thesis subject or the department, the publication may be one of the following:
a. A paper presented at a national or international scientific meeting,
b. An article published in, accepted for publication by, or assigned a DOI number in a peer-reviewed/indexed journal,
c. A paper presented at a symposium organized by IZU in the fields of Social/Natural Sciences.
8. A student who transfers to a thesis master's program pays the difference between the Thesis/Non-Thesis Master's Program fees determined by the Board of Trustees for the year of transfer. No refund is made to a student who transfers from a thesis master's program to a non-thesis master's program.
