DIRECTIVE ON THE ACCEPTANCE OF SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES AS A DOCTORAL THESIS

Purpose

Article 1 (1) This directive has been issued to govern the practice of preparing doctoral theses from scientific publications, and with the aim of raising the scientific quality of doctoral theses at İZÜ, encouraging the production of high-quality publications from the doctoral theses being carried out, increasing the number of İZÜ-affiliated publications indexed in scientific citation indexes (the indexes specified in the İZÜ Academic Promotion and Appointment Criteria: SCI, SSCI, AHCI), and facilitating the thesis writing process for successful doctoral students.

Principles

Article 2 (1) A doctoral student may submit at least three publications prepared within the scope of their doctoral thesis work to be accepted in lieu of a doctoral thesis. Of these publications, at least two in the Institute of Natural Sciences and at least one in the Institute of Social Sciences must be articles published in, or accepted for publication by (having received a DOI number), the international SCI, SSCI or AHCI indexes. These studies must have been prepared during the doctoral programme.

(2) The thesis student is expected to have made a significant contribution to the research in the publications and to their writing. The predominant contribution to the publication in question must belong to the student, and the student must be the first author.

(3) The name of the thesis supervisor may appear as the second author in the publications.

(4) Publication(s) used in one thesis may not be used in another thesis.

(5) The thesis evaluation jury decides on the academic adequacy of the three articles submitted in lieu of a doctoral thesis.

Application

Article 4 (1) The student applies to the Institute with the articles they have prepared, together with a letter obtained from the thesis supervisor setting out the student’s contributions to the preparation and writing of the articles.

Entry into force

Article 5 (1) This directive enters into force on the date of its publication.

Execution

Article 6 (1) The provisions of this directive are executed by the Head of the relevant Department and the Director of the Institute.
