About the Program
About the Program
Islamic economics and finance, with its theoretical and practical aspects, reveals how economic activities can be carried out within the framework of Shari'ah principles. In this respect, unlike the current economic system, which causes problems such as excessive financialization, unrequited value production and unequal distribution of wealth and produces crises; Islamic economics envisages a stable economic structure based on real economy, in which wealth is shared fairly, away from excessive uncertainty and risk.
In this direction, the main purpose of the Islamic Economics and Finance Master’s Program is to contribute to the development of the theory and practice of Islamic economics and the establishment of an Islamic economic and financial system by emphasizing the legal and moral aspects of Islam. Another aim of the program is to contribute to the professional experience of those who are still working in participation banks and the field of interest-free banking.
In this context, the program includes courses on Islamic economics, basic Fiqh knowledge on economic and financial issues, interest-free banking, comparative characteristics of traditional and participation banks, scientific research methods.
Islamic Economics and Finance Master's Program consists of 7 courses, a graduate seminar and a thesis (120 ECTS in total). The normal duration of completing this program is 4 semesters, and the maximum duration is 6 semesters. Students who cannot complete the course period within 4 semesters are dismissed. An additional course fee is required for each semester in addition to the normal duration of the program (an additional course fee for the 2021-22 academic year is determined as 2000 TL, regardless of the scholarship rate). In order to complete the course stage and move on to the thesis stage, students must have successfully passed all the courses in the curriculum, including the prerequisite courses, and have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.50. Students who complete the course phase are entitled to proceed to the thesis phase.
Prerequisite Courses
Since Islamic economics and finance is a multidisciplinary field where Islamic sciences, economics and finance intersect, there are two prerequisite courses in the program. In that regard, for those who have not bachelor of science or master’s degree from Shari’ah, Islamic sciences, and Islamic economics and finance programs, they should register to at least one of the following courses: “IEC 509 – Methodology of Islamic Law” and IEC 536 – Islamic Commercial Law. Moreover, for those who have not bachelor of science or master’s degree from Islamic economics and finance, economics, business administration, finance and banking programs, they should register to “IEC 547 – Economic and Financial Theory” course.
In addition, the students who have graduated from other fields which are not above-mentioned, they should register to both two courses (IEC 547 and IEC 509/IEC 536). Each of these courses have 7.5 ECTS and will be accepted as one of the elective courses that the students are required to take.
