ISLAMIC SCIENCES - DOCTORATE

About the Program

It consists of seven courses, seminar, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and dissertation study. (240 ECTS total) The normal duration of this program is 8 semesters and the maximum duration is 12 semesters.

a.In order for a student who is enrolled in a doctoral program to graduate, at least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled.

  1. Two papers presented at national or international scientific meetings,
  2. An article published in a peer-reviewed/ indexed journal, accepted for publication, or received a DOI number,
  3. Two papers presented at Social / Science symposiums organized by IZU.
Program Objectives & Goals

Objectives

  1. The principles of faith raised on Islamic culture and civilization and the Qur'an and Hadith (Sunnah), which are the main sources of this faith, have been deeply researched and thoroughly interpreted in the historical process through the imagination of the truth. It is important that the understanding of the truth revealed by the Qur'an and Sunnah taking into consideration the way of interpretation of human and life in the historical process in an authentic way of understanding, explaining and interpreting. In this context, method (usul) and style emerges as a very important subject. Many important disciplines such as Fiqh, Tafsir, Kelam and Tasawwuf emerged in the historical process of understanding the Qur'an and Hadith in a true way and true interpretation. Also many scholar tried to bring their existence, knowledge and values to life. It is essestial that these disciplines are handled individually and in a certain integrity within a subject, scope and methods. The aim of the PhD program in Islamic Sciences is to understand the importance and priority of these disciplines as well as to understand the present conditions and to provide academic conditions for the developmentment of scientists who will produce solutions to problems.
  2. The aim of the PhD program is to educate researchers who have the ability of doing scientific research in science branches within the scope of Islamic Studies and who have adopted scientific thought and ethic rules. Also it is one of the important object of the program that being able to solve problems of their field and produce solutions to them by have inquiry, development, productivity and participation qualifications in academic subjects.
Program Learning Outcomes

KNOWLEDGE

  1. In terms of Islamic Studies, to know Arabic in the position of source language to understand and interpret basic works.

COMPETENCE

  1. To recognize different religious understandings and interpretations that have been influential in Islamic societies throughout history through reference to essential sources.
  2. To analyze the basic problems related to the field from different directions and to syntheses.
  3. The information in the texts can be grounded and evaluated in terms of epistemological and moral.

SKILL

  1. To be able to critically read and evaluate information available in the sources.

Admission Requirements

-To have a master's degree with a thesis in Basic Islamic Sciences or other Divinity Departments,

-Get at least 55 points from ALES (SÖZ or EA or SAY-point type),

-To get a score of at least 55 from YDS or YÖKDİL, or from the foreign language exams accepted as equivalent by ÖSYM.

-Graduates of the Master's program without thesis cannot apply to the doctoral program. However, students who are enrolled in non-thesis master's programs and who have graduated before 06/02/2013 can apply to the doctoral program.

-The courses of this program are given in İstanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Altunizade campus.

Graduation Requirements

It consists of seven twenty-one-hour lectures, a seminar, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis work. (Total 240 ECTS and 3.00 and above average) The normal duration of completing this program is 8 semesters and the maximum duration is 12 semesters.

Students enrolled in doctoral programs must fulfill at least one of the following conditions before the thesis defense exam in order to graduate.

Two papers presented at national or international scientific meetings,
An article published in a refereed / indexed journal, accepted for publication or with a DOI number,
Two papers presented at the symposiums organized by IZU in the fields of Social / Science.


The publication should be about the thesis subject of the student or a subject related to the department.
In publications, the approval of the thesis advisor must be obtained.
Publications must have the name of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University.
