test

I am Hassan Habeeb. I am a graduate of Political Science and International Relations, and I went on Erasmus in February, the second semester of 2018. I am so glad I went; thanks to Erasmus I had the chance to travel to 12 countries. I had the opportunity to gain a completely different experience through a new culture and a new education system. If I had the chance to go on Erasmus again, I would do it without a second thought. With this piece I wanted to share my own experience and the opportunities I gained with you.

THE CITY

Wroclaw is located in the southwestern part of Poland. One of Poland's most beautiful and most colourful cities, Wroclaw is famous for its brightly coloured houses, its wide squares, the dwarf statues you come across on every corner and its university. In short, it is a student city. It is a suitable city for Erasmus because it uses its own currency (the zloty) instead of the euro, so living costs are low.

What is public transport like in Wroclaw?

Wroclaw is one of those cities you can comfortably explore on foot, and it is a bicycle-friendly city. There are places to rent a bicycle in almost every part of the city. Since the city is flat, cycling was a real pleasure. In my opinion, you absolutely must discover Wroclaw by bicycle. What is more, the public transport system is organised and works properly; the trams and buses arrive exactly on time, without even a minute's delay.

For cycling enthusiasts: how can you rent a bicycle?

  • First of all, you need to register on this website: https://wroclawskirower.pl/en/
  • Fill in the form, read the rules, pay the registration fee by entering your credit card details and activate your account.
  • Once registration is complete, a confirmation message and a PIN code will be sent to your phone and e-mail address.
  • You need to place a deposit of at least 10 zloty in your account.
  • After completing this step, go to the nearest bicycle terminal.
  • Press the Rent button on the screen and enter your mobile phone number, your PIN code and the number of the bicycle you want to rent.
  • Once you have done this, the bicycle you have rented will be unlocked automatically.
  • When you have finished with the bicycle, return to a bicycle terminal and leave the bicycle where you picked it up. If you have left it in the right place, you will hear a beep. There is nothing else you need to do.

Note: the bicycle service only operates during the autumn and summer seasons.

  • EDUCATION
  • Erasmus students are first given a 10-day Polish language course. It is optional, but if you take the language course you will at least be able to shop easily at the corner store without having to use sign language with the elderly shopkeepers.
  • In departments where the language of instruction is English, 90 percent of the students are Erasmus and international students. The courses are easy, but it varies from lecturer to lecturer: some assess with exams, others with assignments and presentations. All the lecturers are friendly and warm.
  • DORMITORY and FOOD
  • The University of Wroclaw has 3 dormitories and offers Erasmus students the chance to stay there. There are single, double and triple rooms, and the dormitories are comfortable and safe. In terms of price, they are cheaper than dormitories in Türkiye. The dormitories are open 24/7 and you can come and go at any hour; they only close the door between 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning for the security shift change.
  • Detailed information about the dormitories: https://uni.wroc.pl/en/student-dorms/
  • As for food, there are kitchens on every floor of the dormitories, so you can cook for yourself. If you would rather not bother with cooking, you can find all kinds of food around the dormitories, including dishes from different cultures and different countries.
  • If you are particularly careful about halal food, there is a Turkish grocery store in the centre of Wroclaw and also a Muslim market next to the mosque, where you can do your shopping.
  • Affordable supermarkets in Poland, similar to BİM and A101
  • Biedronka
  • Lidl
  • Auchan
  • Tesco
  • Makro
  • Carrefour
  • Real
  • You can shop at affordable prices at supermarkets like these.

Opportunities and travelling around Europe

  • With your student card you can benefit from student discounts on public transport and at museums and historical sites. If you have a student card from any European country, you can benefit from student discounts in other European countries as well.

  • Poland and other European countries offer students the opportunity to work part-time. During my Erasmus period I had classes two days a week, and to make use of the other days I worked part-time at a company. In fact, my Erasmus was rather like Work and Travel, because the grant received from Erasmus was not enough for travelling. I made a plan for myself and worked, and with those earnings I had the chance to travel to 12 countries. In the meantime, I would like to share my own travel plan with you. If you enjoy travelling, when you go to Poland with Erasmus you should definitely not fly directly; take a connecting flight through another country, visit that country and then continue on to Poland. I travelled via a connection in Athens, Greece, and had a 16-hour layover, which gave me the chance to see Athens. Also, when applying for your visa, ask for one month more than your study period, so that you can set off travelling as soon as school ends and return to Türkiye from wherever your money runs out.

MY TRAVEL ROUTE

  • Wroclaw (Poland) - Berlin (Germany) - Amsterdam (Netherlands) - Brussels (Belgium) - Paris (France) - Barcelona (Spain) - Milan, Rome, Venice (Italy) - Vienna (Austria) - Prague (Czechia), then back to Wroclaw, and from Wroclaw to Budapest (Hungary) and from there to Istanbul.
  • Websites and tips for finding cheap tickets and accommodation while travelling
  • ISIC (International Student Identity Card) The ISIC card provides discounts at restaurants, hostels and transport companies in all European countries, including Türkiye. You can obtain it as a virtual card in Türkiye for 20 TL. In Europe it costs around 15 euros, so it is cheaper to buy it in Türkiye. Detailed information: https://isic.org.tr/isic-kart-nedir/

FlixBus: This is an intercity and international bus service, like Metro Turizm in Türkiye. It is a German company and operates in almost all European countries. The fares are cheaper than other buses and it is comfortable. They also offer a discounted ticket service called InterFlix, with 5 city trips for 99 euros, which works out at 20 euros per ticket; so while a bus ticket from Paris (France) to Barcelona (Spain) costs 89 euros, with Interflix you can travel for 20 euros.

RyanAir: You can find cheap flight tickets with Ryanair; for detailed information: https://www.ryanair.com/gb/en/

wizzAir : https://wizzair.com/en-gb#/

For accommodation: Hostelworld, Hostel.com and Airbnb offer accommodation at reasonable prices. You can also find discounts exclusive to the ISIC card on the ISIC website.

Erasmus Registration Process and Visa Application

Poland and the University of Wroclaw operate better and more systematically than other countries and universities. It is also easy. After you apply to the university, they contact you by e-mail and you can follow all the procedures through the campus information system.

The visa process takes at least 10 working days. Applications for a Polish visa are made through the company VFS Global: https://www.vfsglobal.com/poland/turkey/

Since the Erasmus visa covers 6 months, a National Visa (D) is issued, and with a D visa you can travel throughout Europe for 90 days.

Finally, I definitely recommend Poland to anyone thinking of going on Erasmus, because it is inexpensive and, being right in the middle of Europe, you can easily travel around the continent. I wish all the new candidates considering Erasmus every success.
