About the Program
It consists of seven courses, seminar, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and dissertation study. (240 ECTS total) The normal duration of this program is 8 semesters and the maximum duration is 12 semesters.
a.In order for a student who is enrolled in a doctoral program to graduate, at least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled.
- Two papers presented at national or international scientific meetings,
- An article published in a peer-reviewed/ indexed journal, accepted for publication, or received a DOI number,
- Two papers presented at Social / Science symposiums organized by IZU.
Program Objectives & Goals
Objectives
- To train researchers who are specialized in the characteristics and historical contexts of civilizations, their comparison with each other, their contribution to the human heritage, the relations of our country's history and civilization, who have learned to do scientific thinking and research, and who have developed analytical and critical thinking skills.
- To design and implement scientific, independent and original new studies in the field of history and civilization.
- To bring in experts who have absorbed the values of their own history and civilization, who are sensitive to the problems of their civilization and who can take responsibility.
- To ensure students being equipped to investigate their historical background and values of civilization based on scientific principles.

KNOWLEDGE
- Based on his undergraduate and graduate qualifications in the field of history and civilization, he/she can develop and deepen current and advanced historical knowledge at the level of expertise with original thinking and / or research, and reach original definitions that will bring innovation in his field.
- He/She can comprehend the relations and interactions with different disciplines related to history and civilization and use specialist information in analyzing and evaluating complex ideas in the field and reach original results with them.
- He/She can have the knowledge of applying basic methods and research techniques related to social sciences.

- He/She can develop an innovative knowledge, method, design and/or practice or adapt an already known knowledge, method, design and/or practice to another field; research, conceive, design, adapt and implement an original subject.
- He/She can critically analyze, synthesize and evaluate new and complex ideas about the field of history and civilization.

Degree and Level Awarded
Students who complete the requirements of the program receive a doctoral degree.
Admission Requirements
-To be a graduate with a thesis,
-Get at least 55 points from ALES (SÖZ-EA-SAY point types),
-Get a score of at least 55 from YDS or YÖKDİL or an equivalent score from foreign language exams accepted as equivalent by ÖSYM,
- International / foreign candidates are required to obtain a TÖMER C1 certificate from the Turkish Education Centers of the universities, since the language of the program is Turkish.
Graduation Requirements
IZU Graduate Education and Examination Regulations are applied for the graduation requirements from the Doctorate program of the Department of History and Civilization Studies. https://www.izu.edu.tr/ogrenci/kayit-kabul/mevzuat/yonetmelikler/lisansustu-egitim-ve-ogretim-yonetmeligi.
Students who successfully complete their courses can graduate if they write an original doctoral thesis and present this thesis in front of the jury and succeed.
Recognition of Prior Learning
The graduates who meet the requirements for application to the History and Civilization Studies Doctorate Program and who are successful in the entrance exam to the program are accepted to the program. Upon the recommendation of the exam jury and the approval of the head of the department, they enroll in the Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Graduate Education Institute, Department of History and Civilization Studies, Doctoral Education Program.
Employment Opportunities
Those who have scientific expertise in the field of History and Civilization Studies can work with the title of historian and Ottoman Turkish specialist in public institutions and organizations such as universities, Presidency State Archives, Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Directorate of Religious Affairs, Museums and development agencies.
Access to Further Studies
Students who complete the requirements of the program receive a doctoral degree.
