Course Objective

To interpret past and present of the history of Western Civilization by touching upon its main lines. To analyze effects of religion,being in the first place, economy and political developments on the course of civilization. To understand emerging of Euro-centric history reading. Apart from these, To make students learn how European civilization and its founding sub-cultures affected World history.

Course Content

Culture, Civilization ,East-West identity, Self-perception , Belongingness and descriptions of Western civilization.On the other hand, Ancient Anatolian,Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Mediterranian, Greco-Romen cultures , Jewish culture, Orthodoxy in the context of Christianity, Catholicism ,Protestantism and these cultures’ variants reaching up to present day will be examined. These cultures’ relation with literature -language, art and politics will be tackled. Moreover, Ancient and Medieval Europe , Roman empire , Renaissance period ,Roman church and feudality ,Reform, the age of discovery , Enlightenment and Modernization , Industrial revolution and Colonialism, Globalization and Codes of the contemporary World will be other headlines of the  course. Students will be given assigment and they will be asked to do presentation in the classes. The topics of the course will be analyzed through Q&A sessions.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. - Students will be able to express the compounds (elements)of the cultures taking places in the history of Western Civilization
  2. Students will be able to correctly express the religions and cultures that are under the classification of Western Civilization
  3. - Students will be able to comprehend and transmit the place of Western civilization in the World history
  4. - Students will be able to understand Western Colonialism and World order
  5. Students will be able to understand how Eurocentric history reading realizes. And they will understand what this approach costs to
