About the Program
Doctorate program (PhD) in English Language and Literature under the Graduate Education Institute is a 4-year doctoral degree program (the normal duration of this program is 8 semesters and the maximum duration is 12 semesters). The program's medium of instruction is English.
The objective of the Programme is to train academicians for the Departments of English Language and Literature who specialise in the field and to train specialists in English Language and Literature who have an in-depth knowledge in the field to be employed not only in relevant faculties but also in ministries, the media and related state and private sectors.
The program consists of seven courses, seminar, a qualifying exam, thesis proposal and dissertation study. The student must gain 240 ECTS in total after the completion of all the studies just mentioned.
For a student who is enrolled in a doctoral program to graduate, at least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled.
- Two papers presented at national or international scientific meetings,
- An article published in a peer-reviewed/ indexed journal accepted for publication, or received a DOI number,
- Two papers presented at Social / Science symposiums organized by the IZU.
- The publication must be about a subject related to the thesis subject or program chosen by the student.
- In publications, the approval of the thesis supervisor must be obtained.
- In publications, the name of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University must necessarily take place.

Objectives
- The aim of this program is to train experts, successful academics and literary critics in the field of literature.
- The doctoral program aims to be an internationally renowned interdisciplinary language teaching and research centre.
- The program aims to enable students to achieve advanced critical thinking ability to make original comments on the works they read, to transfer them and to contribute to existing literary theories with new ways of thinking.
- The program aims to equip students with advanced knowledge and expertise in their fields as well as to provide them with sufficient skills to be competent scientists and to conduct original research in the field of literature.

- The student will be able to evaluate necessary up-to-date knowledge and skill of teaching English literature and culture in national and international environments at the doctoral level.
- The student will be able to carry out research independently with an interdisciplinary approach by making use of critical, creative and analytical skills, solve problems and relate their outputs in national and international professional and social environments by using effective means at the doctoral level.
- The student will be able to develop an unbiased and respectful attitude to his/her own culture and other cultures through analysing English literature, history and society by attending curricular and extracurricular activities.
- The student develops an unbiased, respectful and open-minded attitude to communicate with and learn about different religions, languages, races, sexes and social classes.

Admission Requirements
Candidates applying for the PhD program in English language and literature should meet the following criteria:
- Candidates should hold a master's degree in English language and literature or American culture and literature with a thesis.,
- Candidates (only Turkish candidates) should get at least 55 points from “Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES).
- candidates should hold at least 80 points from English Language Examination such as YDS or YOKDIL (English) or internationally recognised language (English) exams accepted by ÖSYM such as TOEFL
- Graduates of a master's program without a thesis dissertation cannot apply for a doctoral program. However, those students who were enrolled in or graduated from Master's programs without a thesis before 06/02/2013 can apply for a doctoral program.
The courses of this program are given at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Halkalı Campus.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate from this program, candidates must fulfil the following criteria:
- They must take 7 main courses and a seminar course with at least 21 local credits (60 ECTS credits).
- They must gain 240 ECTS in total.
- They must also have at least a 3.0 CGPA out of 4.00
- They must write an original thesis in the field and defend it successfully before a doctoral jury.
Recognition of Prior Learning
The process of recognition of Prior Learning in Turkish Higher Education is expanding every day. For this reason, recognition of previous education is also fully implemented in all programs of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University (IZU). For this reason, at the beginning of their education, candidates are exempt from the courses they have taken before as long as previously-taken-courses are similar to the courses offered at the IZU. .
Employment Opportunities
In addition to academic jobs, graduates are also able to find jobs which require cultural and literary knowledge, such as those in tourism, ministries, banks, state and private media institutions. They can also work as translators, writers and/or editors. Besides the positions in secondary schools and academic institutions, they can also work at various state and private companies and international offices and the European Union departments of the ministries.
Access to Further Studies
Students who successfuly complete this program can do postdoctoral studies.
