Course Objective

Today, 54% of the world's population lives in urban areas. In Turkey, 92% of the population, which is an average of 78 million according to 2015 data, lives in provincial and district centers. Even with these demographic data alone, it can be said that urban and urbanization is the basis of sociology. The city / city is one of the most important areas of sociology. This derste city / city theories will be introduced from the early periods on a daily basis through the basic texts of urban sociology. Marx, Weber, Simmel, Wirth to Lefebvre, Castells and Harvey. Because, in the 21st century, analyzing the society is one way to read the cities and the cities.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will examine a critical view of urban reconstruction and its socio-spatial consequences, especially after the 1980s, in the world;
  2. Students will explore the different urban dynamics and problems that arise in late industrialized / capitalist cities.
  3. The students will explore the different urban dynamics and problems that arise in the context of Turkey.
  4. Students will learn the dynamics of urbanization in cities and the theories that explain sociological change in a comparative way
