Course Objective

To be able to understand the socio-economic structure of the Ottoman Empire and recogninze the institutions, practice and staff associated with it.

Course Content

A short social and economic evaluation of Ottoman history. Economic mentality, money, finance, tax farming-Iltizam, malikane and esham system in the Ottoman Empire. Trade, trade roads, settlement, city and village life in the Ottoman Empire. The importance of villages in terms of social and economic history. Non-Muslims in the Ottoman Empire. Foundations-Waqf in the Ottoman Empire.
