Course Objective
To provide gains in history of culture, culture-sensitive counseling; the reasons for the development of culturally sensitive psychological counseling; cultural counseling skills and cultural sensitive counseling practices.
Course Content
Introduction to psychological counseling and psychotherapy. From the perspective of the therapist and the client, the limitations of monocultural counseling and psychotherapy. The main criteria of multicultural counseling and psychotherapy. Conceptual Foundations and Ethical Issues. The Role of Culture in Therapy and Interpretation. A Multicultural Consultant. Multicultural and Professional Ethics in International Context. Multicultural Psychological Counseling Models. Multicultural Psychological Counseling and Functional Approaches in Therapy. Multicultural qualification models. Development of multicultural competence in psychotherapy and psychological counseling. Power relations and social justice in counseling and psychotherapy.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Understanding of the basic issues of multicultural counseling and psychotherapy.
- Understanding of how the cultural background influences behaviors and the framework of interpretation of both the therapist and the client as well as their relationship.
- Familiarity with culturally responsive intervention techniques and strategies.
