Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of major psychotherapy approaches. The course is designed to help students learn the fundamental concepts, assumptions about human nature, therapeutic processes, and intervention techniques of object relations theory, self psychology, person-centered therapy, Gestalt therapy, existential therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. It also aims to enable students to compare different psychotherapy approaches and evaluate their applications in clinical practice.

Course Content

The course covers object relations theory and its applications, self psychology and its applications, person-centered therapy and its applications, Gestalt therapy, existential therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. The theoretical foundations, key concepts, approaches to the therapeutic relationship, intervention techniques, and clinical applications of each approach will be discussed. The course also includes review sessions and practice-oriented activities.

  1. Integrate therapeutic tools into practice through role-playing, case studies, and clinical exercises.
  2. Evaluate the cultural, ethical, and professional considerations in psychotherapy.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze psychotherapy research and its applications.
  4. Describe the theoretical foundations, assumptions, and goals of major psychotherapy models.
  5. Identify and apply the basic techniques associated with each therapeutic approach
  6. Compare and contrast different theories of psychotherapy in terms of strengths and limitations.
