Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with information about the responsibilities of the operating room nursing, surgical asepsis and central sterilization, safe surgical principles and patient and employee safety principles during operation, ethical and legal responsibilities related to operating room nursing.

Course Content

This course includes the organization of the team in the operating room, the duties, powers and responsibilities of the operating room nurses, operating room design and management, standards in operating room nursing, central sterilization practices, preparation of operating room suits, operative positions and complications, patient safety in the operating room, safe surgical checklist, safety in the operating room and legal and ethical issues in the operating room.

Explanations

Evaluation of the course:

Achievement: 20% Midterm + 30% Homework + 50% Final exam = 100%

The mid-term and final exams will consist of 75% multiple choice questions and 25% open-ended questions.

In the course work, each student will prepare a report on the patient's intraoperative care via a sample of patients undergoing surgery. This report should include the patient's operative type, surgery position, materials used in surgery, decontamination of these materials, sterilization of disinfection, skin cleansing, safe surgical checklist information, types of anesthesia, and ethical and legal responsibilities for patients and employees.

Homework will be evaluated over 100 points based on the accuracy and adequacy of the information on the subject and the resource use.

Rules

Students must attend 70% of the course. Each student has to follow the course to continue. The student who cannot fulfill the condition of attendance can not take the Final and make-up exam.

He is mandatory to enter the course on time

  1. To be able to apply surgical aseptic technique and to apply sterile principles safely
  2. To know the importance of the roles, responsibility, authority and team work of the operating room nurse
  3. To explain the importance of providing safe environment during operation and anesthesia in operating room
  4. To be able to list the standard of care, disinfection and sterilization in the operating room
  5. To be able to explain the precautions about patient and worker safety in the operating room
  6. To be able to list the new surgical approaches and nursing applications and their properties
