Course Objective

The aim of this course is for students to learn stem cell biology and its types, understand the molecular mechanisms of stem cells, understand the basis of tissue engineering, and learn the uses of stem cells in tissue engineering and the ethical problems that arise from them.

Course Content

Introduction to stem cell biology, types of stem cells, self-renewal and differentiation of stem cells, molecular mechanisms of stem cells, introduction to tissue engineering, biomaterials used in tissue engineering, tissue engineering applications, ethical problems related to tissue engineering and stem cell use.

Required Resources

Essentials of Stem Cell Biology, 2. Press, Editör:Robert Lanza and Anthony Atala, Elsevier Academic press

Tissue Engineering, 3. Press, Editör: Clemens Van Blitterswijk,Elsevier Academic press

Explanations

• A midterm, a final exam, and an assignment will be administered.
• Students are required to present on the assigned topic for the assignment and submit a report on their research.
• Absence exam regulations will be enforced in accordance with the rules set by the Dean's Office.
• Final exams will cover all topics, but will primarily focus on topics related to the post-midterm exam.
• All exams will be administered as standard exams and will include review questions.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. The student acquires basic knowledge about stem cell biology.
  2. Students discuss the mechanisms related to the properties of stem cells.
  3. The student acquires basic knowledge about tissue engineering
  4. The student understands the importance of using stem cells in medicine.
