Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts, historical development, and major application areas of biotechnology; to provide basic knowledge on genes, genomes, and recombinant DNA technology; to familiarize students with microbial, plant, animal, medical, and aquatic biotechnology applications; and to raise awareness of the ethical, legal, and social aspects of biotechnological advancements.

Course Content

This course covers the definition, scope, and historical development of biotechnology, as well as fundamental concepts related to genes and genomes. The principles and applications of recombinant DNA technology are introduced and discussed. The course examines major fields of biotechnology, including microbial, plant, and animal biotechnology, with emphasis on their applications in agriculture, medicine, and industry. In addition, applications of biotechnology in medical and aquatic fields are addressed. Finally, ethical issues related to biotechnological advancements are discussed.
