Course Objective

The aim of this course is to explore both theoretical and practical aspects of adapting historical buildings to contemporary needs while preserving their heritage. Students are expected to develop the ability to balance the continuity of architectural heritage with current uses.

Course Content

The concept of adaptive reuse, types and characteristics of historical buildings, problems and solutions encountered during function change, conservation principles, usage analysis, examination of successful adaptive reuse examples, project development processes, and user-oriented design approaches.

Explanations

Practices will be conducted during the semester, and the average of these practices will constitute the practice grade.

The subjects of the midterm will be announced within a reasonable timeframe. The date, time, and place of the midterm will be announced by the Dean's Office. Make-up exams will be provided for students with valid excuses in accordance with IZU regulations.

The final exam covers all topics discussed throughout the semester. The date, time, and place of the final will be announced by the Dean's Office.

Rules

Within the scope of the term project, students are expected to develop adaptive reuse proposals for selected sites.

Presentation dates will be announced in advance, and both individual and group presentations will be evaluated.

Exam dates will be announced by the relevant faculty dean’s office.
