Course Objective

Aims of this course are to give information about the relation between matter and chemistry, chemical laws and concepts, calculations about formula and equations, the structure of matter and material and changes occuring in the structure, to prepare solutions. In addition, to provide a through introduction to the basic principles of chemistry to engineering students in order to prepare them for further study in chemistry and support their understanding and design of practical applications in their fields.

Course Content

Atoms, basic chemical reactions, aqueous solutions, gases, acids and bases, chemical equilibrium, chemicas kinetic, organic compounds, chemical bonds, oxidation-reduction, periodic table and its properties.

General Chemistry: Principles and Modern Applications, 11th ed. 2016 – Ralph H. Petrucci, F. Geoffrey Herring, Jeffry D. Madura, Carey Bissonnette; Pearson.

Recommended Resources

  • Online materials, including powerpoint slides and reading assignments. The materials for each topic will be uploaded to campus information system every week.

Explanations

Students are expected to read the corresponding textbook chapters for each lecture, in addition to studying the posted presentations, and any additional materials.

  • Attendance is expected of all students at all classroom sessions. In the event of your absence, you are held responsible for all material covered or assigned during class.
