Course Objective

This course aims to enable students to carry out a project to solve a specific engineering problem using the theoretical and practical knowledge they have acquired during their education. This course helps students to develop research, problem solving, analytical thinking, project management, reporting, and presentation skills. Students, with the guidance of an academic advisor, develop a project focused on solving engineering problems and manage this process with an interdisciplinary approach. This course aims to prepare students for engineering careers by increasing their professional skills.

Course Content

It focuses on students' project development process to solve an engineering problem. The course allows students to prepare a concrete project with engineering approaches. In this course, a team of students, accompanied by an academic advisor, is expected to define the engineering problem they are interested in and determine the project topic. The scope and purpose of the project are detailed. A detailed literature search is conducted on the identified project topic. This stage will help students to understand the existing knowledge and previous studies related to the project topic. The steps and work packages to be implemented in the project will be determined. The project management process, time planning, and the methods and tools will be detailed. Risk analysis and resource planning will be performed. In addition, the steps to be applied for the Graduation Study II course should be determined within the scope of this course.

Explanations

a) Report writing language

All reports will be submitted in English to groups formed by software engineering and computer engineering students.

b) Formation of groups

- Groups should be a maximum of 4 people. They can develop joint projects with students from Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Food Engineering, Nursing, Business Administration, Law, etc.

c) Determination of mentors

- After making a portfolio presentation to the lecturers you want to be your advisor, select the agreed lecturer(s) on the form to be shared (3 preferences will be allowed)

- Advisor professors will have a group quota. The group quota of the professors will be determined depending on the student density during the semester (the maximum number of project groups of the professors is considered as 4+1. +1 is the group quota for a single person).

- In case the quotas of your preferred professors are filled, an assignment will be made to a professor whose quota is not filled.

- The advisors will be determined based on the opinions of your preferred professors.

d)Change of group/change of advisor

- Group changes/advisor changes must be made by the end of the 8th week of the semester. Subsequent change requests will not be accepted.

e) Participation in studies

Students who do not participate in group work and meetings determined by the advisor 3 times will fail the course due to absenteeism.

f) Timing and method of submission of reports

- All reports will be submitted as a single report on behalf of the group.

- Submission of the interim report (Project Proposal) - To be submitted at the end of the 10th week, the headings to be included in the interim report are as follows: aim and objective of the thesis, project phases, work packages, and work-time schedule. The relevant report format will be shared with Moodle.

- Final report submission - To be submitted at the end of the 14th week, the required headings in the final report are as follows: abstract, introduction, literature review, materials and methods, experimental studies and results, work packages, and timetable for Capstone Project II. The relevant report format will be shared with Moodle.

- The plagiarism rate in the final report should be a maximum of 20%.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Students gain the ability to identify, analyze and solve real world engineering problems. Students produce solutions to complex engineering problems within the scope of a project.
  2. Students learn current knowledge, technologies and methods by conducting a comprehensive literature review on the project topic.
  3. Students develop project management skills such as project planning, project scheduling and resource management.
  4. Students design and develop a system, process or product in accordance with the problem they have identified. In this process, they use their creative thinking and innovative solutions skills.
  5. Students effectively represent the results of the project through written reports and oral presentations. Students learn to present project processes and findings clearly and concisely.
  6. Students study effectively in teams and develop interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
  7. Students learn to consider ethical principles in engineering projects. Students learn to act with a sense of professional responsibility and produce practical and sustainable solutions.
  8. Students are open to learning new knowledge and skills during their projects and develop the habit of self-learning.
