Patent and Trademark Disputes Discussed

At the patent and trademark dispute panel organized by the Faculty of Law at IZU, the changes brought about by artificial intelligence in intellectual property and its future impacts were discussed.

The "Patent and Trademark Disputes from a Practitioner's Perspective" panel, organized by the İstanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Faculty of Law, took place at the Abdullah Tivnikli Conference Hall. The events was attended by Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, Prof, Dr. Erhan İçener, Vice Rector of IZU, Dr. Halit Serhan Ercivelek, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Canan Küçükali, judges, academics, and students. Experts in the field discussed current Supreme Court rulings and legal issues encountered in practice within the framework of Intellectual and Industrial Property Law. Dr. Halit Serhan Ercivelek, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, expressed his pleasure in hosting such an important event.

DURAK: "Brand Value Surpasses All Economic Values"
Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, highlighted that Turkey is the second country after China in terms of geographic indications and ranked twelfth in patent applications. He emphasized, “Our main agenda as an institution is technology investments and legal regulations. Industrial property is becoming increasingly important every day. Brand value has surpassed all other economic values.”

İÇENER: "Patents and Trademarks Are Key to Turkey's Development"
Prof. Dr. Erhan İçener, Vice Rector of IZU, also stressed that patents, trademarks, and geographic indications are among the most important indicators of Turkey's development. He added, “These topics are key to inter-country competition. Such meetings bring new perspectives to the problems faced in the field and contribute to solutions. We are aware of the importance of the issue and are happy to be part of this search for solutions.”

CALBOLİ: "The Future Will Be Defined by AI and Intellectual Property"
Prof. Dr. Irene Calboli, guest speaker from Texas A&M University, addressed the topics of artificial intelligence and intellectual property ownership in her presentation titled “Commercial Trademark and Patent Disputes in 2025.” She pointed out the fundamental conflicts between the protectability of AI-generated content and intellectual property responsibility rules. She noted that this trend leads to intersections between copyright, patent, and data protection laws. Calboli also emphasized that trademark disputes are not only legal issues but also sociological ones, stating, “The future will be defined by artificial intelligence and intellectual property issues.”

Throughout the day, experts in the field explored trademark and patent disputes through practical examples.
