Aim of the training

This is a workshop that teaches ways of watching a work attentively — a film, a series or a literary work — analysing it and evaluating it with sound reasoning. Over twenty-eight weeks, participants learn analytical viewing, the language of cinema, genre and auteur theory, and ideology and representation; they write regularly, revise their work and produce a final critical essay.

Content of the Training

Each week consists of three stages: a short theoretical introduction, a workshop exercise (writing or analysis) and peer critique. The extended fourteen-week schedule gives each concept room to breathe; it includes separate production and critique weeks at regular intervals as well as in-depth revision cycles. The emphasis is not on memorisation but on production, repetition and thinking together.

Instructor

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Özdemir
  • Dr. Lect. Necmettin Özmen
