Course Objective
This course summarizes the broad field of Ottoman economic and social history. It aims to introduce the students with the various economic activities and social relations that evolved during the agesold lifespan of the Ottoman Empire. This course also sheds light on the Ottoman economic thought concerning the governing of economy, state and society. This holistic value system existed of princples on morality, politics and economics.
Course Content
In order to understand the long term continuity and moments of ruptures in the Ottoman economic history, this course focuses on the changes and continuity of the social conditions and on the various economic structures in the broad geography of the Ottoman Empire. It also explains the key principles of Ottoman economic thought that played a decisive role in governing and managing of various economic activities in the Ottoman lands. We will discuss and try to understand these key ideas and values that formed the Ottoman economic world view and how they directed the different economic activities and relationships ranging from agriculture and land regime to commerce and financing.
Course Learning Outcomes
- To explore the key ideas that formed the Ottoman economic thought system and to understand how they directed the economy and various economic relations ranging from agriculture and land regime to trade and finance.
- To develp a new approach to the field of Islamic Economics and Finance through the study of Ottoman economy and to search for new models with the awareness of Islamic belief system, ethics and historical experience.
- To have knowledge about the inner confusions and the academic debates in the social sciences, concerning its approache to the knowledge of the past, the methods that are used and on the nature of the knowledge that is produced by the social sciences.
- To gain competence on analysing the world history of economics and on the Ottoman economic history
- To read and understand the history of Ottoman economy by opening up new intellectual areas that goes beyond the historical thought categories, which were formulated by Eurocentric and orientalist theories
- Comparative analysis of the capitalist economy and its implications on the Ottoman society and economy
- To develop a perspective to understand the integrity of the process of change and transformation in the history of Ottoman economy
- To understand the long term continuity and the moments of ruptures in the various economic acitivities, in the social life conditions and in the economic organisation of the Ottoman society
