Course Objective

What is the state? How do states form, consolidate or fail? What are the principal functions of the state? The course will answer these questions through an in-depth examination of the existing theories of the state in the political science, political theory and international relations literature. 

Course Content

Students will be taught the key theories of the state such as class, liberal, neo-Weberian, culturalist, etc. They will be exposed to the differences in the surveyed approaches and interpretations to the state in the course namely state-society relations, state autonomy or agency and civic consent or obedience.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will understand the diverse theories of the state and the differences between these theories. Additionally, students will acquire the ability to critically apply the theories to case studies.
