Course Objective

The main objective of the course is to introduce the region to advanced students insociology and social sciences at large.

Course Content

This module will examine the political emergence and evolution of the modern Middle East. This is understood inclusively, as the region encompassing the Arab states, Turkey, Iran and Israel. The module will be organised thematically but will emphasise historical trends and context throughout. The themes to be considered include the impact of colonialism, the construction of identities, the state and its institutions, as well as political ideology, democratisation and gender in politics. 

 

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. to acquaint with the major social, cultural, economic and international dimensions of political interactions in modern Middle East states;
  2. to equip students with a good empirical grasp of different country cases and the ability to compare between them;
  3. to train students to critically evaluate the principal approaches to writing about the Middle East, whether in academia, the media or policy circles;
