Course Objective

What was the Ottoman practice of diplomacy on the eve of modernity? How did Ottoman diplomacy change in response to the increasingly assertive presence of European states in Eastern Europe and West Asia? Students on this course will be introduced to the historical practice of Ottoman diplomacy and its underlying principles and the subsequent changes to this practice in the context of the formation of an international state system centred on the European powers.

Course Content

Students will examine historical and modern diplomatic practices of the Ottomans through an examination of primary sources. Key stages of the development of Ottoman diplomacy begin from the Renaissance to Russo-Ottoman relations in the 18th century to Selim III’s reforms in the early 19th century.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will learn how to identify the key epochs of Ottoman diplomacy involving continuity and transformation from the Renaissance to the Tanzimat era. Further, students will acquire the skills of directly interpreting primary sources in the archives located in Istanbul and in other national archives.
