Course Objective

The objective is to provide enough knowledge and skills in geriatric nursing, to define aging theories and concepts, process-related problems, physiological and psychological changes, to learn appropriate nursing interventions, to explain legal and ethical dimensions in terms of elderly care.

Course Content

Includes the elderly population and their problems in the world and in our country, health problems evolving and changing together with aging process, and approaches to this problems, healthy aging and improving quality of life during old ages and elderly nursing care

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. 1.Know facts about aging, aging theories, and physical and psychosocial changes related to elderly
  2. Know the politics of the elderly population in the world and in Turkey, can make a comparative analysis of these policies
  3. Effective nursing care planning, implementation and evaluation
  4. To be able to follow the researches made in geriatrics
  5. To know the basic concepts of geriatric nursing.
  6. To be able to gain sufficient knowledge and opinions about the planning and execution of the researches which will be important in the development of geriatric nursing
  7. Transfer the theoretical knowledge about Geriatrics to the care of elderly person
  8. To be able to gain knowledge and skills about continuous maintenance
  9. To be able to gain necessary theoretical knowledge and application skills about geriatric individual
  10. Conduct a comprehensive geriatric assessment
  11. identify and assess common problems in elderly including sarcopenia,pressure sores,falls, delirium, sleeping problems and incontinence as weel as neclect and abuse; take precautions to prevent those problems, and make interventions to improve those problems.
  12. To be able to work in coordination with the health team who provide care for elderly individuals and to provide effective communication
  13. To be able to comprehend basic and current information about care of elderly person
  14. Know the problems that may arise in elderly patients who are in intensive care and take necessary precautions.
