Course Objective

The aim of the course is to follow and interpret the historical lines between the past and the present day of the  Eastern Civilisation by examining its outlines, to examine impacts of the cultural, economic, political, and particularly religious developments that occurred outside of the East and modern West, to rebuild the concept of the “East” which has discriminated by the Euro-centric World history thesis. In addition, to provide students with information about how the Eastern civilization and its rich sub-cultures have affected World history.

Course Content

In this course the  concepts of Culture, Civilisation, East-West, Identity, belonging and civilisation will be analyzed. The course also contains developments in political, social, cultural, economic, linguistic ,literary and artistic fields of pre-Islamic Arabian-Turkish-Iranian-Anatolian-Mesopotamian-Egyptian-Mediterranian, Jewish, Eastern Chirstian-Orthodox cultures as well as Islamic culture.Along with all the cultures mentioned above, cultures of Indian sub-continent and East Asian cultures such as China, Japan,Korea will be taken into consideration. In addition to Abrahamic religions (Islam- Judaism- Christianity “especially eastern Orthodox Christianity” and its local forms),Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Sikh religion, Jainism, Manichaeism, Zoroastrism, Tengrism and Shintoism will be some other topics in the curriculum of this course.
