Course Objective
To learn the concepts of “dialect” and “variant”; to understand why a language is divided into dialects and variants; to recognize that a language has both historical and contemporary dialects; to master the classification criteria of the Turkish language; to be able to classify the Turkish language; and to acquire knowledge about the dialects of the Turkish language from east to west and from north to south.
Course Content
The concepts and distinctions of “dialect,” “variance,” “accent,” and “regional variant”; the developmental stages of the Turkish language from the past to the present; attempts to classify the current dialects of the Turkish language; the historical connections of the contemporary dialects of the Turkish language; from east to west; from north to south; the regions where contemporary dialects of the Turkish language are spoken and the sociocultural context in these environments; the linguistic features of contemporary dialects of the Turkish language; and literary works composed in contemporary dialects of the Turkish language.
