Course Objective
To learn about the lexicon of the Turkish language and the changes in that lexicon from Old Turkish to the present day, using examples.
Course Content
Starting with Old Turkish, the lexicon across all historical periods of the Turkish language will be examined, along with the changes that have occurred within it. Words formed through derivation, compounding, reduplication, repetition, and other means during the historical periods of the Turkish language will be analyzed. Focusing on the state of the Old Turkic lexicon in Modern Turkish and its dialects, the study will investigate which words have reached the present day through change and which have remained unchanged. While evaluating the lexicon, words from different cultural spheres and areas of daily life (agriculture, medicine, cuisine, customs and traditions, etc.) will be classified and examined. The impact of social processes on language will be discussed.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Defines the terms “lexical resources” and “lexicology.”
- Students will develop the ability to analyze and interpret the vocabulary of Old Turkish.
- Students will develop the ability to analyze and interpret the vocabulary of Middle Turkish.
- Students will gain the ability to examine the development and evolution of the Turkish vocabulary from Old Turkish to the present day.
- Learns about the semantic changes in words over the course of history.
