Course Objective

This course aims to provide a broad overview of state building and formation processes in different contexts from a comparative and historical perspective. The main objective is to trace the emergence, diffusion, functions, and possible demise of modern states and the state system. Among other things, the course explores topics such as the long-term processes of state formation and expansion; variation in state forms and structures; the worldwide diffusion of the state; the nature and practice of sovereignty; the development and transformation of citizenship; and the future of the state in a globalizing world.

  1. By the end of this course, students will be able to Explain the origins, diffusion, and transformation of states.
  2. Discuss modernization of different countries across the Western and non-Western world.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge on the different models of political development and state-building.
