Course Objective
This course aims to inform students on the EU’s place and role in global politics by focusing on the EU’s foreign and security policy and debates on what kind of power and aktör the EU is.
Course Content
This course examines the origins, workings and priorities of the European Union’s foreign and security policy and its role in global politics. It analyses the evolution of the EU’s global role and explains the growing influence of the EU in traditional areas such as trade and development, as well as new areas such as the environment, human rights, conflict prevention and global governance. The development of the EU’s relations with the key actors and regions around the globe is also analysed.
Course Learning Outcomes
- understand theory and practice of European foreign, security and defence policies and elaborate their evolution.
- critically analyse the EU’s actorness in global politics and different conceptualisation of its power status.
- explain the EU’s relations with key actors in global politics and the EU’s engagement with regions and international organizations
- demonstrate the ability to articulate ideas to others in a clear and concise manner both orally and in a written format.
