Course Objective

The primary objective of this course is to provide an understanding of the historical, philosophical, and legal foundations, as well as the steps, of the identification and assessment process in special education. It aims to help students gain competence in comparing formal and informal assessment tools, and in selecting and interpreting appropriate assessment methods in areas such as intelligence, adaptive behavior, emotion-behavior, language, reading-writing, and mathematics. In addition, the course aims to foster skills in conducting developmental assessments in early childhood, explaining models for determining family needs, and assessing vocational/transition skills.

Course Content

This course covers the historical, philosophical, and legal foundations of assessment in special education, alongside the assessment process itself. It examines formal and informal assessment methods, related tool examples, and the diagnosis and evaluation procedures for individuals with special needs. Within the scope of the course, the assessment of intelligence/cognitive domain, adaptive behaviors, behavior and emotional state, language, reading-writing, and mathematical skills is explored. Furthermore, assessment in early childhood, the assessment of family needs, and the evaluation of vocational/transition skills are addressed in detail.

Explanations

Course Delivery Method: Classes will be conducted through the delivery of theoretical foundations alongside practical examples of formal and informal assessment tools, case analyses, and in-class discussions.

Material and Resource Tracking: Weekly course topics will be shared the preceding week, and students are expected to attend classes having completed the relevant weekly readings.

Rules

Attendance Obligation: In accordance with university regulations, there is an attendance requirement for theoretical classes, and students are expected to follow the course processes regularly.

Communication Channels: Announcements and notifications regarding the course will be made through official systems (Microsoft Teams-Email), and it is important for students to check their institutional emails regularly.
