Course Objective
To teach and apply current theories, approaches, methods and techniques related to Mathematics Education. To develop a sample activity environment in the teaching of concepts, processes and skills in the primary school 1-4 mathematics curriculum and to develop the knowledge and skills of the classroom teacher in mathematics.
Course Content
The purpose and basic principles of mathematics teaching; history of mathematics teaching (in the world and in Turkey); teaching and learning strategies to be used in teaching mathematics; Scope, purpose and features of the primary school mathematics program; major learning theories and their relationships with mathematics learning; important skills in mathematics education, association, representations, communication, reasoning, problem solving (strategies, stages, problem types, etc.); using information technologies, development of the concept of number in the child (pre-counting developments, one-to-one mapping, cardinal value, combining, separating, comparing, equivalence, scarcity, abundance, etc.); place value, formation and structural properties of natural numbers; arithmetic operations, related topics in the primary school mathematics curriculum, achievements and examples of activities suitable for them.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Evaluates how mathematical thinking develops in children
- Explain how the concept of number develops in children.
- Plan mathematics courses suitable for the mathematical development characteristics of primary school 1-4 students.
- Explains how mathematics learning process takes place.
- Explain how mathematical knowledge can be associated with different disciplines and types of mathematical knowledge.
- Explain important skills in mathematics and how to develop them in children.
