Course Objective

The goal of the course is to introduce the main issues of development economics. What affects economic growth, inequality, and poverty? Why do some countries achieve high levels of economic development and others do not? What are the policies governments can implement to change the growth path of their countries? In this course we will initially approach these ques- tions from a “macro” perspective and later introduce a “microeconomic” view of the problems.

  1. To comprehend the framework (concept, scope and content) of economic development.
  2. To comprehend classic theories of economic growth and development.
  3. To have a wide insightful of interatctivity / interdependancy among poverty, inequality and development.
  4. To analyze rural development, agricultural transformation, effect of education on human capital and migration.
  5. To analyze the effect of foreign trade, foreign investment, and financial movements on economic development.
  6. To evaluate the roles of market, state and civil society.
