Dersin Amacı

The primary aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental principles of experimental psychology through both theoretical instruction and hands-on application. The course is designed to enhance students' understanding of psychological research by focusing on experimental design, hypothesis formulation, variable identification, data collection, and statistical analysis. By engaging in classic and contemporary psychological experiments, students will develop the skills necessary to critically evaluate scientific studies and conduct their own experimental research.

Ders İçeriği

Experimental Psychology is a hands-on course designed to teach how psychological theories are tested using the scientific method. Throughout the course, students learn and apply all stages of the experimental research process. These stages include identifying a research question, formulating a hypothesis, designing an experiment, collecting data, conducting statistical analyses, and reporting the findings.

The course focuses on the following areas:

Scientific Research Methods:
Covering the methodology underlying the experimental approach in psychology, including the definition of variables, the use of control groups, and experimental manipulation techniques.

Types of Experimental Design:
Exploring within-subjects and between-subjects designs, discussing their advantages, disadvantages, and appropriate contexts for use.

Experiments Across Subfields of Psychology:
Examining experiments in areas such as perception, attention, memory, learning, emotion, motivation, and social interaction. Students also conduct small-scale experimental applications.

Conducting Applied Experiments:
Students design, implement, and analyze their own experimental studies, presenting their findings in class.

Statistical Evaluation:
Focusing on how to analyze experimental data, including concepts such as statistical significance, effect size, and rules for reporting results.

Scientific Reporting and Presentation:
Teaching how to write findings in APA format, use graphs and tables effectively, and develop academic presentation skills.

By the end of this course, students will have learned how to investigate a psychological phenomenon using scientific methods, designed and conducted their own experimental study, and reported the results in an academic format.

Dersin Öğrenme Çıktıları

  1. Students will be able to explain the fundamental principles of experimental psychology, including the logic of scientific inquiry and the role of experimentation in psychological research.
  2. Students will be able to design basic and advanced experimental studies by correctly identifying independent, dependent, and control variables.
  3. Students will be able to formulate clear and theoretically grounded operational definitions for psychological constructs.
  4. Students will be able to apply experimental control techniques to reduce confounding variables and increase internal validity.
  5. Students will be able to identify subject-related variables such as individual differences, demand characteristics, and experimenter effects, and evaluate strategies to control them.
  6. Students will be able to evaluate ethical principles in experimental research, including informed consent, confidentiality, risk management, and the use of deception.
  7. Students will be able to locate, read, and critically evaluate empirical research articles in psychology using scientific reporting standards.
  8. Students will be able to select appropriate measurement tools and data collection techniques for different experimental research questions.
  9. Students will be able to design and interpret experiments related to perception and attention using established experimental paradigms.
  10. Students will be able to explain experimental approaches to memory and other cognitive processes and evaluate empirical findings in these domains.
  11. Students will be able to analyze experimental studies on emotion and motivation with respect to methodology and theoretical implications.
  12. Students will be able to describe and evaluate learning and behavior experiments based on classical and contemporary experimental models.
  13. Students will be able to develop a coherent experimental research proposal that integrates research questions, hypotheses, design, measurement, and ethical considerations. İstersen bunu: daha kısa (8–10 çıktı) hale getirebilirim, Bloom taksonomisi
